filtration feedback - monitor suspended solids in liquids

FILTRATION FEEDBACK

APPLICATION NOTE 1.001.A0

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of filtration feedback is to minimize downtime, maximize throughput, and insure clarity at the filter output.

APPLICATION

Protecting against contamination from breakthrough – to protect against contamination in case of breakthrough, the sensor continuously monitors the clarity of the filtrate. The instant the concentration of suspended solids exceeds a preset limit, the transmitter signals the filter controller. Consequently, no poorly filtered liquid need ever escape for delivery.

Maximizing throughput – to maximize throughput, the filter controller may be programmed to respond in three stages.

*Stage 1. Concentration of suspended solids exceeds preset limit. Begin timing. If concentration declines below limit soon enough to preserve overall clarity, do nothing. Continue delivering filtrate.

*Stage 2. Concentration of suspended solids exceeds preset limit too long. Stop delivery of filtrate. Begin recirculation, waiting for filter cake to heal itself. If self-healing occurs, as indicated by decline in concentration, resume-delivering filtrate.

*Stage 3. Self-healing fails to occur within a preset time. Initiate backwash or signal for human intervention. This three-stage reaction maximizes throughput and insures quality simultaneously.

Optimizing the precoat cycle - as the precoat is deposited, the precoating filtrate clears up gradually. The moment the sensor detects that the filtrate has cleared entirely, the transmitter signals the filter controller to switch over from precoating to filtering operation. Because precoat time is minimized, time on-line is increased and the expenditure of filter aid is held to a minimum. In addition, the coating is certain to be adequate.

SOLUTION

The figure below shows the main filtration feedback paths. At the filter output is the Monitek Suspended Solids Monitor. The sensor detects the clarity of the filtrate and the transmitter feeds a signal back to the filter controller.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

The filtration feedback system allows the operator the flexibility to use the monitor in various ways to optimize his system and make it the most efficient for his particular process.
