measure chromium in water

Chromium (VI) 0 to 5 ppm

CHROMIUM (VI)

Although chromium exists in two valence states, III and IV, it is the chromium VI which is the predominant pollutant of interest. The requirement to ensure that chromium is not being discharged into effluent water streams is of great importance in the plating industry.

Other industries using chromium products and chromium based catalysts are also faced with the same problem. These include metal pickling, anodizing of aluminum, in the leather industry (where chromium is used as tanning agent) and in the manufacture of paints, dyes, explosives and ceramics. Chromium (VI) is readily measured in the laboratory using the APHA Standard Method which involves the reaction of diphenylcarbazide to form a violet colored complex which exhibits a characteristic absorption spectrum.

TYTRONICS'® SENTINEL

Tytronics’ Sentinel is an on-line colorimetric analyzer. The instrument uses a batch sampling technique that allows the use of 0.25" tubing for sample lines so small amounts of solids will not affect instrument performance. Other advantages of batch sampling are:

  • analytical results are not affected by sample and reagent flows

  • analyses are only performed as frequently as required, minimizing reagent consumption

METHOD OF ANALYSIS

The analysis requires two reagents; reagent 1 is an acid buffer/dilution water while reagent 2 is the color forming solution.
